We woke up to a cold and rainy day in Charleston. Good thing we were heading to the airport first thing this morning for a flight to Miami. We arrived to sunshine and 88 degrees.
We are home basing for the next couple of days in the Wynwood district. With some time to spare before check-in, we decided to spend some time in the Museum of Graffiti. Walking down the street was a colorful explosion for the visual senses. Graffiti, street art, and everything in between, was everywhere including the sidewalks.

The museum focused on the history of graffiti from the early 60’s where graffiti artists used paint to mark identity rather than territory. The exhibit continued to the current day where graffiti artists make their works on canvas and are shown in galleries and exhibitions.

Graffiti is not just a bunch of scribbles or bubble letters spray painted on publicly available surfaces. There is a hierarchy, a language, and a culture to the art form. The museum was small, but we spent over an hour there, and I needed more time to thoroughly absorb the exhibits. There is a distinction between graffiti and street art. I’m not quite clear on what it is, but the guy at the museum who took our tickets made it clear that “corporate art” was on certain streets, and graffiti on others.

I had planned to walk around the area for a bit, but it was oppressively hot, and I needed a plan. There was something to look at in all directions, on every block.

We have officially left the southern food of low country South Carolina behind (I think I am having fried chicken and mac ‘n cheese withdrawals – I never, ever in my life thought I would say that). Tonight is Peruvian/Japanese Fusion….that should be an adventure.
We ran into a delivery robot on our way to dinner. It’s like watching a potential crash with its every move. Totally captivating.
