If you have been following our blog for awhile, then you know that I have a passion around textured photographs and the different moods and feelings you can create by layering different textures, changing blend modes, removing texture from select areas, and changing opacity. Its definitely something I do when I am in a “creative” mood.
In this post I’ve included photos from our Christmas road trip. In all of these images, there was something about the scene that I really liked, but felt it needed extra dimension. I think I am getting to a point where I just “know” that an image will end up being textured.
I’ve learned that texturing is a combination of creative exploration, patience, trial and error, and being willing to throw something out that you’ve spent an hour on and start over with a fresh set of ideas.

I, too, love textures. Your image of the single sailboat is stunning. Where do you get your textures? Do you make them yourself? One texture I have used many times as a background texture is a closeup image I took of a multi-colored wool scarf (muted colors) with a prominent weave/nub. Do you have a fine art background? These are very painterly, as others you’ve shared with us. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Loretta – while I do create my own textures, I tend to use the ones from Flypaper textures more. I like the variety and quality. and for the price, its a quick and fast way to get into texturing. Your idea about photographing wool, is great. I’m going to try that. I do not have an art background – I’m a professional corporate trainer, but have always gravitated toward art in my personal life. thank you for following us, and giving us feedback.
