Penobscot Narrows Bridge

It’s only 80 miles from Bar Harbor to Rockport, Maine, but there’s plenty to see. Here is our three stops, plus a lobster roll lunch.

First up was the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. Built in 2006 in just 42 months, it is a 2,120 feet long cable-stayed bridge with two 420 foot towers, one with an observatory.

Just below the bridge is Fort Knox, not the gold one, but one built in the mid 1800’s to protect the Penobscot River Valley from British incursions as the USA and Great Britain argued over the proper border between Maine and Quebec.

The forts has placements for 135 canons, though only 74 were eventually deployed. The fort is completely in tact and you can walk through the walls, quarters, and yards.

After such an exciting morning, I needed lunch so Mary found the best lobster roll in a 50 mile radius at Young’s Lobster Pound in Belfast.

After lunch we were off to our last stop, the Fort Pointe Lighthouse.
