Mary and I are in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park to see the “Mitten on Mitten” semi-annual show. This occurs when the shadow of the West Mitten falls onto the East Mitten. This phenomenon happens around, but not on the Spring and Fall equinoxes.

Monument Valley is located on the border of Arizona and Utah, two hours from Page, AZ, and two and a half hours from Moab, UT. The Tribal Park was established in 1958 and covers 92,000 acres. The sandstone buttes and mesas are 400-1,000 feet high.

For the mitten-on-mitten show to happen, there needs to be a clear western horizon, so that the sunset will strike the West Mitten. Unfortunately, tonight, it was cloudy and we did not have the desired conditions.

There was still plenty to see and as we arrived in the early afternoon, we made several infrared monochrome photos. We’ll try again tomorrow evening.
