The Halemaumau Crater in the Kailauea Caldera from Volcano House, Volcanoes National Park, Big Island of Hawaii. We tried this shot four times and were rained out and fogged out thrice.
In 2018, Mary and I went on 13 trips with highlights being the Big Island of Hawaii, Alaska, Yosemite, and Death Valley. Between the two of us we made about 20,000 images in the field and kept 2,300 photographs. About half are mine and half are Mary’s. Most of my favorites are from our trips to Yosemite and Death Valley. So here are my 15 favorite photos in chronological order.
The Watchman and Virgin River from the Canyon Junction Bridge in Zion National Park. It was especially memorable because I was with Arden Andrade.Inspiration Point, Bryce Canyon National Park, also with Arden Andrade. One of the best sunsets of our lives. Moonstone Beach, Cambria, CADopey, the humpback whale in the Prince William Sound, Alaska.
Valley View, Yosemite National Park, CASunset at Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park, CASunset from Sentinel Bridge, Yosemite National Park, CAOlmsted Point, Yosemite National Park, CATenaya Lake, Yosemite National Park, CAMoonset over the Stovepipe Well dunes, Death Valley National Park, CAClassic sunrise at Zabriskie Point, Death Valley, CAA spectacular sunrise in the Devil’s Golf Course, Death Valley, CAMesquite Dunes, Death Valley, CAThis might actually be my favorite photo of the year. We were walking back to the car after 90 minutes on the dunes. We were hot and cold, tired, and the wind was howling. We had not included the moon in any of our photos that morning because it was too high in the sky. This dune and tree were about 15 feet above us as we walked between dunes and it just pointed right at the setting moon. There is a “beautiful desolation” to this image.
