Because of all of the rain in Southern CA, the Barker Dam area of Joshua Tree has a lot of water for the first time in about eight years. Mary and I made a trip out there just to get that one shot. There’s a lot you can do in Josh in one day. Here’s what we did.
I always go to Jumbo Rocks. Even though I have photographed these rocks many times, they are always a delight.
When driving from Jumbo Rocks back to Hidden Valley, park in the lot at Queen Mine Road/Geology Tour Road well before Sheep Pass and walk into the Joshua Tree field. There are many great trees and plenty of space for composing them. We used our infrared cameras for much of the day.
Barker Dam is really a sunrise shot, but we scouted it in the late afternoon. The wind was up so we had to find an area out of the way just to get a few photos.

Here is our very popular blog post about Joshua Tree.

Love the use of black and white! I especially like the big rock with the tree curving towards it…great composition!
thank you
