Mary and I had a great travel year in 2016. We took 11 named trips including many weekend jaunts. We had major trips to Tucson, Maine, Page (AZ), Death Valley, and New Mexico. We had a variety of locations that were in major cities and in pretty remote locations. Here are my favorite photos from 2016.
We made about 15,000 photos in the field and kept just under 1,800. I have a 10/5/1 rule of thumb. We keep about 10% of the photos we make in the field. 5% are usually pretty good and 1% are truly very good or outstanding photos.

Which one did you like best?
Next week, Mary’s favorite photos from 2016.

Awesome choices, and a few I don’t recognize despite being a pretty avid follower of the blog. No favorite, per se, but huge Slot Canyon pic and in love with the cranes. Must have been some task to catch them on the go.
*huge fan of
Thanks NC
Thanks Najasila.
All are spectacular! I especially like the shots in Page, AZ. Been there a few times and you really captured the beauty and the colors you don’t see in photos very often!
My favorite would be the Acadia National Park shot…if I absolutely had pick just one. Really good stuff Peter!
Thanks Dennis.
I can’t possibly choose a favorite, but the ones from Page, AZ and Maine are top picks for me. Thank you for sharing the splendor of creation than few of us get the chance to witness for ourselves! Love your blogs…
*that* few of us…

All are amazing.y favorites are the birds in flight and the slot canyons which are on my list of places to photograph. Nice body of work.

I’m a sucker for patterns in nature…love the moon set.
Thanks LaNae
So hard to choose! They are all terrific, I must say, but I just really love lighthouses so my eyes lingered the longest at the one of Portland Head Light, ME.
Thanks for the comment. I could do lighthouses all day, too.
